Abstract

Enrymatrc acidolysis of refined palm mid fraction oil and a palmitic-stearic fatty acid mixture produced cocoa butter equivalent (CBE). This study used computer-aided process simulation and SuperPro Designer to develop and evaluate a sustainable design for producing CBE from RBD palm oil. Based on literatures, Block Flow Diagram (BFD) and unit operations for each procedures were developed. Then, input data of parameters of operation were used to develop the design of production of CBE from RBD palm oil in SuperPro Designer. The economic evaluation report was generated by SuperPro Designer was used as the source of evaluation for sustainable design. 1000kg/batch of RBD palm oil was used as the raw material for the production of CBE by using enzymatic interesterification method. The reaction was done between palm mid fraction and palmitic-stearic fatty acid mixture with immobilized lipases as catalyst of reaction in packed bed reactor at 600C. 183,017 kg of CBE for 572 number of batch per year can be produce and take 7917.67 hours. The design of production of CBE from RBD palm oil used RM 20,243,000 as the capital investment and take 4.44 years payback time. While the CBE is the main revenue of this production, there also other revenue that generated by this design of production which is palm oil stearin and palm oil double olein. Therefore, based on this study it can be concluded that this design of production of CBE from RBD palm oil can be considered as the sustainable.
